Stereoviews are a special type of photograph taken with a camera which has both a right and left lens. When viewed through a stereoscope the left and right prints merge into one THREE DIMENTIONAL image. This form of entertainment became popular in the 1850’s and remained so until it was superceded by the advent of moving pictures.
There are many, many topics collectors find appealing such as historical (1861-65 Civil War/other wars, disasters such as the 1868 and 1906 San Francisco Earthquakes, also floods, fire and more), famous people (presidents, royalty, authors, etc.), studio views of people and animals (usually in comedy situations, and showing costumes, furniture and knick-knacks of the period), African – American subjects (unfortunately these are often ‘comedy’ and almost always in very poor taste, but also there are occupational and other serious views), Travel (this covers the World, including North America, and including city views, usually instantaneous action, also scenics), Expositions and Fairs, Mining, Industry, Occupational and many more subjects.
